I tried doing a 'sorcery system-update' tonight and it hung on a "Checking
dependencies" line. So I switched from sorcery stable to sorcery devel
(this problem was already reported and fixed in devel). Now a
system-update is casting spells which are not installed. I think it may be
a problem with optional dependencies.

sorcery checks dependencies on gaim, then checks dependencies on esound,
which is NOT installed but is an optional dependency of gaim. Then it
checks dependencies on alsa-lib, which is NOT installed but is an optional
dependency of esound.

Any ideas? The relevant sorcery output is listed below.
