------- Additional Comments From acedit AT armory.com 2006-01-03 23:33 -------
the most recent suggestions ive seen say that
kB is 10^3 or a kilo-byte (capital K is for Kelvin, lowecase k is for kilo)
and
MB is 10^6 or a mega-byte (capital M is for mega, lowercase m is for milli)
whereas
KiB is 2^10 or a Kibibyte
and
MiB is 2^20 or a Mibibyte

basically attempting to co-exist with SI units, i guess the 'bi' is mneumonic
for binary.

I've also seen KB mean 1024, and K mean 1000, and lots of other abuses...
heres some vaguely academic writing on the subject
http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~mgk25/information-units.txt

For what its worth the 'units' tool understands kibibytes as 1024.

What fun... :-/

I see ls -lh and du -h both use K and M, so I suppose the path of least
resistance is to hop on the unix/gnu bandwagon.
