------- Additional Comments From acedit AT armory.com 2004-12-01 03:29 -------
I believe some spells still dont compile with gcc 3.4, I dont spend much time
thinking about it, but I think apache is one of them, theres probably some
others. Its always a compromise. Anyways, alley_cat is really the better
person
to ask about that.

As for the naming scheme in gcc, again all I can offer is idle speculation.
Usually it seems borrowed from whatever marketing term is applied to that cpu.
Amd used to make a line of processors called the k5, and then the k6, which
was
in effect their equivalent ofi586 and i686, later they had k6-2 (my previous
computer was one). I guess after that for a while there were some k7's and
then
the athlon series came out, perhaps they were actually the same, which seems
reasonable given the timeframe. Now theres the "opteron" cpus, which logically
could be k8s. I would imagine that k8 is more of a term coined by amd for
their
cpu core and the gcc guys are just following along.
