I think you're right, gcc should default to 32 bit compiling if neither -m32
or -m64 is specified.

I was thinking about what you said about how most apps get no advantage from
being compiled for 64-bit given that they haven't been coded to take
advantage
of it. I wondered if it might be a good idea to implement a 64-bit switch in
the DETAILS file. That way we could turn on 64-bit compiles per spell rather
than globally, for spells that would benefit from it (like gcc, binutils,
POVray etc). Other spells would default to 32-bit compiles to eliminate
unnecessary bloating of the binaries. Does that sound like it might be worth
doing?
