It seems to indeed be able to use the Composite Manager extension
freedesktops server has, but xserver (the fd.o X server) is still very
limited. They're currently working on integrating the XFree86 DDX (the
driver model) into xserver as an alternative to the kdrive model used
until now, when that's ready it'll probably be a full scale alternative
to xfree.
If anyone wants to take a try at spells for this, they're probably quite
easy (all of their libs and the server use standard configure; make;
make install, yay :)
The problem is that almost every single spell needs to conflict with all
current xfree spells, and there are quite a lot of libs in the fd.o
xlibs project. Another problem is that many spells will fail with this X
server instead of xfree, as they don't provide imake.
