it was related to glibc, localedef and inclusion of UTF-8 charsets in the
spell. I have rewritten the utf-8 handling, and integrated the changes into
test. if you don't wish to recast glibc just for the localedef fix then
manually run
localedef -i $LANG iso-8859-1 $LANG
this will work for almost all the locales, it is really only an issue with
utf-8.
If you use a different lang to en_* then just
grep $LANG /var/lib/sorcery/codex/$GRIMOIRE/libs/glibc/locales and use the
correct charset instead of ISO8859-1
IF you do wish to use utf-8 locales, you should reset your $LANG to
$LANG.UTF-8 but keep in mind that apparently gtk+ doesn't support unicode so
it will break all gtk+ apps
