I assumed you already had a working java install.
if you don't then rather than "stuff around" with the new version, simply
install j2sdk-bin and move onwards from there. ( it would be a problem with
JAVA_HOME not being set or /etc/profile not being sourced by the user who is
casting)
The spell I attached was the minimum necessary, the patch was also necessary,
if you added the spell to "a" grimoire at the top of you preferences, did
scribe reindex and cast -r -c j2sdk it should have been successful up until
the stage where gcc shits itself trying to assign a memory address for a long
that is "too long".
For 1.4.2 there is a new file j2sdk-1_4_2-bin-scsl.zip which simply holds
gifs, wav files, fonts and sparc bootstrap libs. It used to be included in the
src-scsl.zip file but has been split out for some reason (maybe a size issue)
I think you will have a lot of trouble getting a working runtime without
these so make sure you download it.
Just incase you are still a willing guinea pig here is a version that should
work for gcc3.3.X
This spell actually will install j2sdk-bin if a working java isn't found on
your system, and it will then dispel it once the sdk has been built
successfully. (it might leave the j2sdk-bin depends line in /var/state/
sorcery/packages, I haven't looked at that part of it yet).
None of the lfs patches are needed anymore, two new patches are included.
And alsa-libs and unixODBC are definitely needed.
Give this version a try and let me know if it works. DOn't change anything,
just try it as is, so don't forget to download j2sdk-1_4_2-bin-scsl.zip
