Ok,

I've done a fair bit of investigation on this subject tonight, (to the
point of writing an INSANE replacement spell based on the original .exe
archives available from a sourceforge site + a nifty little tool called
cabextract) and here's what I've found out :

_There is no doubt whatsoever that the truetype.tar.gz archive used by
the truetype spell conform completely to the licensing terms specified
by Microsoft[1]_

The specified terms, both for distribution and use, are in fact _really_
relaxed, and actually makes me wonder why the hell these (great) fonts
aren't shipped with X itself. The full EULA is included in the
truetype.tar.gz as ./truetype/Licen.TXT (It is insanely poorly formatted
and a more readable copy is available here:
http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=1537&offset=60&rows=67#31074)

As a side note, the host of that archive is an xfree86 demigod with very
high public visibility (keith packard[2]). If the archive had indeed
been "warez", he would most likely have been fried for providing it
years ago.

I still actually think a more general/extendable replacement of the
truetype spell might be useful (i.e. my spell currently installs a nice
additional font extracted from an Internet Explorer service pack), but
the major point is that we are not currently breaking any laws.
