Well it appears that I have shot myself in the foot somehow.

I have tried to re-cast 7676 of nvidia_driver spell under my 2.6.15-rc5
kernel where this
version had worked previously but to no avail.

So my situation has worsened as I now have no X at all :(

I have tried to cleanse -- fix, as suggested below, under both kernels.
I have even tried upgrading
to latest kernel, 2.6.16-rc5, but still no good.

I found that the following error line:

/usr/src/NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8178-pkg1/usr/src/nv/os-interface.c:1375:
error: structure has no member named `rlim'

could be removed in the code by remarking out some lines. This then
installs okay but when the module loads
gives an error relating to a previous warning about the remapping page
being incorrect.

Any advice would be appreciated?

To get X working quickly you could switch from the 'nvidia' driver to
'nv' (from X, non-accelerated). I'd also recommend not using a -rc
kernel release if you're having problems, instead use a final version
(e.g. 2.6.15.4) and see if nvidia_driver will work with that.
