We don't have any services on startup by default -- I don't think a
firewall is needed on the iso.

The point was, IMO, that if the user needs/wants a network connection
while installing SMGL that they'll at least be somewhat protected,
even with no services on by default (since some may want to use
portmap, ssh, distcc, etc.).
