Users, developers, world...
It has come to my attention that I need to do some sort of speech to the
masses, an argument stating why you should choose me over another
candidate, or.. no one :)
Some of the questions which have popped up are "Who are the
candidates?", "Why do we need a whole team devoted to PR?" "Why
can't this be done from inside Source Mage GNU/Linux?" "Why is
HauntedUnix involved in so many other projects?".
"Who are the candidates?"
I'm Alex Smith.
A quick bio (which is more difficult than it sounds :)) follows.
My Linux Background:
I've enjoyed working with computers for as long as I can remember. I've
not been so lucky as to have the "Momma ran on UNIX and Daddy was a
mainframe" background, but my parents supported me in my strange hobbies.
I worked with MS Windows boxes until age 13. Then, upon getting my first
broadband connection, I began working with Linux. I have experience with
Mandrake, Gentoo, FreeBSD and many (other) Linux distributions, however
the one I've truly grown to love is SourceMage Linux.
My other background:
Before migrating to Linux, I worked primarily on Windows systems. I played
a couple of games, including STCO - (Star Trek Conquest Online - now
inactive) and CX (Chron X - http://www.chronx.com), run by Genetic
Anomalies. I worked in a PR role for CX, acting as a go between from GA to
the users, making announcements regarding the game and the company. I also
worked on a larger scale, doing customer support, including time as a Team
Leader. I believe that this experience will prove invaluable should I be
allowed to take on the role of PR Team Leader for SMGL.
Please direct any further questions regarding my experience, including
request for references, to me via email at alex AT alexsmith.org.
"Why do we need a PR Team?"
At first, I too was skeptical of SMGL's need for a PR team I . Having
looked at the potential growth in the community which could be generated,
within reason,I now believe that the growth of the SMGL community can
benefit considerably from a concentrated PR effort. I intend to focus on
producing weekly status reports, working with DistroWatch to keep
information on SMGL up-to-date and increasing our DistroWatch rank, and
working with international magazines to create a world wide 1.0 release.
"Why can't this be done from inside Source Mage GNU/Linux?"
I won't speculate on why a current member of the SMGL team has not stepped
forward to take the PR team lead position, or previously suggested one. I
will say that I believe that I have a great deal to offer as a PR team
lead, and that I look forward to the opportunity to learn from the SMGL
team.
"Why is HauntedUnix involved in so many other projects? Will he have time
for SMGL?"
Okay, this one is a toughie.
While I am active in a number of Freenode channels, this is largely on an
occassional user/supporter level. I currently devote time to Mandriva,
for which I om a chanop, and to Sexipedia, where I am a contributor.
There is little else that I feel I can make as full a contribution to as I
wish to contribute to SourceMage GNU/Linux.
I appreciate that, being a new face to the SMGL team, I am not the obvious
choice for PR team leader. I believe that I am a good choice none the
less, for reasons I have stated here. If chosen to serve as the SMGL PR
Team Leader, I will do my level best to help the SGML community grow and
thrive.
