perhaps this is a variation of the problem with the posix version that glibc
exports.
I looked in jkolbs gcc log from his gcc bug and it has this in it

If it were my problem I would do this
bunzip2 /var/log/sorcery/compile/*
grep -r 'head --help' /var/log/sorcery/compile/
and if any packages showed up, i'd check that the coreutils.sh file had been
sourced during login and that head -1 worked and then recompile the affected
spells.
