The new download area is where I saw the 'smgl-latest', which I never use, but
just thought I'd mention that it points to the wrong file. I agree, the
symlink (which apparently isn't even a symlink) is a bad idea, and the
"standard" is to use a LATEST_<VERSION> empty file to denote what the latest
is.
