This seems to be just the usual problem that people have when they don't
set up an inputrc file (at least not a proper one)
putting the del key to some use is definitely one of these things that
need modifying the inputrc (or creating it), and funky chars do so as
well. I personally thought I would never ever need the umlaut chars in a
bash, so I'm happy without the special chars.
They should work fine in emacs, vim, X applications or whatever. They
will just not work in anything using readline (so mainly bash. Also bash
in an xterm).
But let's be honest about this: Who needs the euro sign in a bare bash?
So Far,
Karsten
