Hi Duane, I'll try and answer the few I think I know. ;)

That's great! I agree, I think SMGL has the easiest install out there.
We just need to clean up a few dependencies to have an easier install of
extra apps (which, of course, I forgot to write down to make bug reports
:/).

I can't even get mozilla to compile on my g/f's P4 (had problems with
Alsa, but just remove the sedit line from BUILD, thanks to Gabriel Devenyi
in the following bug: http://bugs.sourcemage.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2867).
On my P3, I stopped using Mozilla, mostly because of focus issues with the
mouse disabling my ability to type anywhere in mozilla, including the
address bar (happens in Windows as well, so it's not a Linux-specific
bug). Have you tried phoenix-devel? It's a much-slimmed down web browser
using the Mozilla code, though not as pretty. :)

I'm not sure. Other libraries are able to coexist by installing into
<lib>-<version>; I don't know why the gal library doesn't do this.
Perhaps talk to the GNOME maintainers. Have you tried running both at
once (by removing the CONFLICTS)? If so, does everything still work
(check by doing a 'sorcery rebuild' ;)).

How does pon set things up? Is pon setuid? I have DSL, so I've never
used pon. :)

Well, apparently XFree86 now comes with newer Xft libraries, so it is best
to use those with XFree86 (at least for now, until newer Xft libraries are
released ;)). You may want to remove the DEPENDS on Xft* from xfree86
before you do so, otherwise xfree86's libraries will be overwritten.

Hope I _did_ light up some of the issues. :)
