Thought I would archive what I found here.
XFree86 online documentation says that your driver must support
antialiasing. The way to find this out is by running `xdpyinfo` and
looking for the line "number of extensions". Listed below are the
extensions loaded, if RENDER is listed you should be good.
Unfortunately in the case of the nvidia driver ('nvidia') this is wrong,
RENDER is listed, but anti aliasing does not work. Everything works
properly with the 'nv' driver.
