i added a line <dir>/usr/share/fonts/truetype</dir> with the other font directories and i removed the stuff from the wiki in my user.js file but nothing changed (restarted x too), so now i have an empty user.js as well. the fonts that i can select in the appearances dropdown are: the Andales, Bitstream, Comic, Courier, Georga, Impact, Luxi, Times New Roman, Tom's New Roman, Trebuchet, Utopia, and Verdana. i have the truetype spelled installed. now i can deal with the pages text if i have to, im still playing with that. but it's what mozilla uses in it's interface itself that's really huge and ugly. i can't find any setting within gnome2 or mozilla to change those. ALSO with this serif font the 2's appear very washed out :(

ugh, got 1.1 to compile with the xft2 stuff and let me say that the
fonts are HIDEOUS! the test in the main web pages i can deal with but
the menus and the text in the To: fields and what not are way to huge.
anyone know how to fix this? also it doesn't seem to detect my truetype
fonts anymore even though i edited that file like in the wiki.

Don't use the preferences described in the wiki with a xft enabled
mozilla! They aren't needed and actually make the whole xft enabling
useless.

Not detecting your truetype fonts is strange, since here it _only_
detects the truetype fonts, not the Type1 fonts ... could also be
related to those prefs. Do you have your font directories containing
truetype fonts in /etc/fonts/fonts.conf?
