Looks like we need a standard place to put the config file then. I thought it was always in my /usr/lib/X11/whatever directory since my first install. I'm wondering how did people get it in other places? shouldn't we have this in some standard way as not to confuse users?

See "man XF86Config"
most distro's use /etc/X11/XF86Config as it's the first non-command-line-specific location that the XFree86 server searches.

hey all, I just noticed that in the last paragraph of the descriptionXF86Config is in my /etc/X11 directory.
for the truetype spell it mentions adding a line to /etc/X11/XF86Config.
the XF86Config file is not in the /etc/X11 directory. this should be
changed as to not confuse the newbies. also in my xfree86 log file i
always get a "Could not init font path element
/usr/share/fonts/truetype/, removing from list!"
what's this mean? i have the appropriate lines in my XftConfig file and
XF86Config file and the fonts are in /usr/share/fonts/truetype. just
curious.
