I run a p4 with linux. Ive never run it with winblows so i dont know
how it performs there, but ive had no speed issues with mine thus far
(what distro are they running?). Ive had my system freeze up a number
of times due to a buggy (and cheap) motherboard. The motherboard is a
via chipset with one of those crappy unsupported onboard sound things,
apparently if you pipe too much data into it (higer chance of a forbidden
dma instruction sequence), the chipset freaks out and hardlocks the
system. The solution is to turn off the sound in the bios.

also have they turned dma on with hdparm? I forgot to do this once and
the system seemed 'slow and buggy' my mp3s skipped and it was funny and
unresponsive. using hdparm solved the problem.
