Even if it were a much more substantial change, which some would call a
rewrite, you would not be allowed to remove the copyright notice because
it would still be based directly on the original. Only when you were to
create something new which happens to implement the same functionality
as something else, but is not based on its implementation, would you be
allowed to only put your copyright notice in it. Or quite simply, only
if you could've made what you made without looking at the original
implemnatation would you be allowed to omit such copyright notices.
