Eric,

Yes. The ax-25 stuff essentially ceased development in 2002/3. Within
the past year someone has taken back some of the development chores.
The rc2 versions are the latest releases as the website documents.

The previous versions were incompatible with the automake/autoconf
system, which required the magic that was sitting in the BUILD file
(specifically patching in a complete makefile). The new versions
support "building on modern distributions" in the changelogs.

As a ham radio operator, and a former packeteer, I can say with some
level of certainty that VERY few people use these packages, and it is
unlikely that those not using them ever will. I certainly won't
deprecate them, but the protocol is rapidly becoming extinct.

The age difference between the previous final releases and the current
release candidate is between 6 and 7 years for all these packages. I'd
rather have a modern RC than an extremely stale stable...thoughts?

Just a heads up - I'm gonna tear the ham section up and try to get
everything current. Naturally I will avoid rc versions except where
they seem necessary ;)
