For one, it didn't build on my box. I could have gone patchhunting or
something,
but imho it's better to have a working beta in the grimoire than a broken
stable release.

Also, I'd prefer to use a beta over a cvs version, as you're suggesting.

If I'm not mistaken, there are lots of spells which use beta or even alpha
versions of tarballs.

So far this beta release has been working flawlessly for me, is there a good
argument to revert
the change back to the (for me at least) broken version?
