Here are some pictures from a restoration project I'm leading in the Giant
Forest, Sequoia National Park. After three days of training and work, we
had to evacuate due to the KNP Complex fire that is licking at the trunks
of the largest plants on earth.
But, even after just three days, many in the crew got the swing of the
scythe, and we were able to cut about 1/2 acre of dense wetland vegetation
and make >100 hay bales and use them to start filling an erosion gully. I
estimate we're 5-10% done,
but with the continuing fire and the likely lingering Park closure, I think
the bulk of the work will have to wait until next year.
This is an experimental pilot project to demonstrate a
wilderness-appropriate technique for restoring erosion gullies that uses
only hand tools: no motors, not even wheels, those aren't allowed in
wilderness.
