Subject: [SANET-MG] UC Berkeley to pave over student organic garden

Hello all,

I'd like to share with you news about the Oxford Tract, published in our
ESPM department newsletter today.

https://espmaction.wordpress.com/2017/02/21/action-bulletin-issue-2/

In the newsletter (PDF attached), Joshua Arnold provides an excellent
history of the Oxford Tract, illuminating the contested nature of land for
science in the public interest -- and why this site is so critical for
hands-on agroecology research today.

"The University is planning to replace the Oxford Tract and Student Organic
Garden with student housing. The tract hosts over 1000 students, faculty
and community members for research and gardening. This helps fulfill our
mission as a Land Grant university. See History below for more info.

The proposed housing will not meet the expected shortage, is proposed at
market price, and will not be an accessible community space. There are
alternatives options.

“The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits
and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic
society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society
constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of
our country.”—Edward Bernays, Propaganda
