The use of entomopathogenic fungi to control insect pests is not new, and
predates Stamets’ 2006 patent by many years. CABI commercialised a
biopesticide based on Metarhizium to control locusts during the 1990s
called Green Muscle. Perhaps the reason that Stamets ideas haven’t (yet)
taken off are due to the technical challenges of using fungi to kill
insects, mostly concerned with application technologies and the relative
slowness of fungi in killing insects compared with a chemical insecticide.
There is also the issue of specificity: killing only the target pest. The
ewao.com article says “controlling over 200,000 species of insects”: that
sounds like a problem, not a solution.

You can read more about this at the LUBILOSA Wikipedia article. Also, there
was a CABI book about it published in 2001.

By the way, CABI established the Bureau of Biological Control in 1947, with
its roots going back to the 1920s. The organization still has an extensive
research programme in this area (follow this link
