However, laudable their motives, what's missing from the Vatican's
approach is an understanding of the basic qualities of
resilient/sustainable systems. Proselytizing about what a system "should
be" is the dead end so may sustainability advocates have followed. Any
system "should be" exactly the way it is. It can be no other until the
underlying drivers are changed.

Unless based on an understanding of how ecosystems survive and thrive, the
proclamations of religions and politicians will result at best in
transitory attitude changes.

Ecological resilience research is beginning to understand the foundations
on which resilient/sustainable systems are constructed. Building on the
pioneering efforts of Lengnick, Walker and Salt, and Holling, we present
eight qualities which appear to be common to all resilient ag systems:

https://meadowcreekvalley.wordpress.com/projects/land/roots-of-resilience-the-book/

Most recently, we have found that the social impacts desired by those
focused on what ag "should be" are highly correlated with our resilience
index based on these basic qualities.

Here's a ppt of our presentation earlier this month to Western SARE PDP on
this topic:

Looking forward to continuing discussion,
