An Ello friend asks:
"The oceans are rising while the land based aquifers are being depleted -
looks like a good time to kickstart water remediation research..."
Except for desalinization and extreme pollution from persistent
hard-to-break-down chemicals biological remediation is an easy job.
Research done at the New Alchemy Instiute led John Todd ans associates to
go into business designing and installing biological passive sewage
treatment facilities. The did a pilot plant at a mountain resort in
Vermont. It could handle anything that was thrown at it though one time
some careless person flushed a lof of chlorine into the system; that slowed
things down for a while. This system was a constructed wetland housed in
linked greenhouses and involved several stages of treatment, using plants
of all sorts, snails, fish and other aquatic creatures. A German scientist
researched marine organisms that could be effectively used in wetlands and
aquatic bioremediation. She built a database around data and that was
collected. I am sure that state of the art technology now is well beyond
this early system.
