I'll be starting up my 12th Permaculture Design Course as co-teacher or
teacher in a couple of weeks, on February 22. I've been reflecting a lot on
lessons learned from interacting with all the amazing students we've had, and
thinking about the next level of succession - where do we go from here?

One thing that one of my teachers, Larry Santoyo says which really resonated
with me is that permaculture isn't something you do, it is something you use.
In other words, it is a set of principles and tools that can be applied to
virtually any activity or occupation to improve abundance and reduce harm to
planet or people. People sometimes equate permaculture with gardening but it
is far more than that. It addresses any aspect of human systems, or human
interaction with other systems (like ecosystems). We strive to focus on urban
areas in our courses, because those systems will be in the most trouble if
systems fail and they are quite complex systems. We break things down to the
simplicity of what you can do in your backyard, and how that can be
extrapolated out, as well as what leverage points for creation of change
exist in cities that we can influence from our position. There are many
exciting resources available in urban regions - the collective
genius aspect alone is a great reason to work in cities. We would love to
host people in this class who are engaged in policy making, community
building, energy issues, water, ecology, social and finance issues, community
activism as well as those who are interested in homesteading, gardening and
farming (and we've expanded all sections, including gardening/farming to
include more supporting materials to help you be successful). We are awed at
what some of our students are getting done out there in those sectors!  If
you know of someone in these fields (or anyone else) who might be interested,
please let us know! We do have limited scholarship or work study especially
for those who are already active in the community, and ask about our
affiliate program.

We are enjoying watching the co-create that is happening in so many different
neighborhoods to make a change to how we do things. We look at the
Permaculture Design Course as one tool to assist the process, and we are
always thinking of ways to align our actions with the needs of both students
and the communities they live in. So let us know what you feel your community
most needs.

Jono Nieger of the Conway School of Design, and who was a consultant with the
University of Massachutsetts permaculture program will be a co-teacher and we
will have other experts facilitating instruction as well. He is a great guy
who is getting more and more active in Florida. He has lived in some great
intentional communities and has a wide range of permaculture experience.

The first morning is always free, and it's a great time to bring friends and
family to find out more about permaculture. It's a good intro to "Why
Permaculture, and What Is It?"  Feb 22, from 9-noon.

We'll have most of the class at Moccasin Lake Park, our partner in
sustainable living crime (:-), but we'll also be reaching out into the
community for field trips, hands on, etc. We continue to respond to student
feedback and increase resilience in the course as far as addressing a variety
of learning styles and needs. And, we have Fun! :-)

For more info on the course see our web site at www.growpermaculture.com, or
call Cathy at 727-495-6145.
