Right on, Darrell. The idea of taking complex industrial or biological
materials possessing high levels of organization and low levels of entropy,
and blasting all that rich organization directly into CO2 and energy--with a
massive increase in entropy and huge loss in organization--seems a profoundly
"wasteful" thing to do. Intelligent life (all the life on the planet) has
learned to put many, many cycles of yield into the extraction of order and
energy from the materials so painstakingly built up to high order by
biological processes. We must start doing this with technological nutrients,
too. The analogy would be: a channeled stream rushing straight down a
hillside to the bottom, versus a series of ponds, each providing water and
energy for many different processes along the way. Burning technological
nutrients is crazy. It's literally burning the house to keep warm. By keeping
the ban, we'll have to figure out wiser things to do with resources than burn
them.
