Update on the permaculture.info -> Appropedia import...

We had some communication problems with a developer in Europe who is
volunteering his time on this, but we managed to connect and we're
discussing what is needed. He says there are some technical challenges with
the database, so we're working on it step by step.

That's good. However, we'll need explicit permission. (I became much more
pedantic about this after we did a lot of work putting a good and
well-known book onto Appropedia, with permission from the author, and then
were asked to take it down because the publisher hadn't understood the
license and hadn't realized what they were agreeing to. Also, it's fair
enough that when we use someone's work, that we have a clear agreement
about it.)

So, each could be sent an email which they saying something like:

We would like to take your work on the now inactive wikis - (the PC Wiki
and the Agriculture Wiki (AgWiki) (hosted on ibiblio) reuse your work on
Appropedia. Please read carefully before agreeing.

- Do you give permission for your content to be used on Appropedia under
the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0
license<https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/>(CC-by-sa
3.0)? This is the license used by Appropedia as well as
Wikipedia, and it allows the work to be modified and reused for any
purpose, with attribution to the source.

But... then we have to ask if having their name mentioned in the edit
summary (and displayed on the "history" page for the article) as adequate
attribution. That means we need to put that attribution in the edit summary
every time we add something from those wikis. (You could just keep the list
of names in a text file open on your computer, and copy it in each time -
"From the PC Wiki, content by Lawrence F. London, Graham Burnett, Bob
Waldrop <insert rest of names> and/or Miekal.") they don't care about being
attributed - but attribution is good, if we can manage it.

If you can use a wikidump

If it's hundreds of pages, we can look into converting it from PhpWiki to
MediaWiki format - otherwise manually is easier.

We do have a handy tool: Copy from the web page, paste into this box:
http://www.appropedia.org/index.php?title=Appropedia:Wikedbox&action=edit
- then press the red [w] button in the middle of the buttons above. Voila -
it's ready to cut and paste to the appropriate Appropedia page (or any
other MediaWiki site) - and links and formatting will be correctly
formatted.

How soon can you add the permaculture.info data? When that is done then

That's great - I hope to have more news for you soon.

Thanks
Chris
