Hello All,
I've been lucky enough to have just completed two courses with Paul
Stamets of Fungi Perfecti, Olympia WA, and he has written an article in
the SOMA newsletter on using fungi to hyperaccumulate metals, esp
caesium 127, and then convert soluble, bio-available compounds into
insoluble oxylates. (The Nuclear Forest Recovery Zone) Link here:
http://www.somamushrooms.org/news/23/somanews23_8.pdf (go to Page 6.)
His website (www.fungi.com) also has very relevant info on
mycogardening and mycorrhizeae to promote healthy garden and field crops.
With the current concerns in the US over the Spent Fuel Pool of Reactor
4 at Fukishima, using natural bioremediation methods may yet find favour
with the authorities.
Now back in the UK finding mushrooms in very unexpected places, doing
very important jobs!
Good to see SANET back in action offering practical advice and solving
problems!

Greetings,
As I understand it, compost is used to clean up radioactive fallout
from nuclear power plants. Add some mushroom spores if you are
worried, they do a great job of reclaiming the soil.

The compost contaminant that I am most concerned with at present is
radioactive fallout from the Fukushima nuke plant; this is ongoing,
and so
far not decreasing; there is a constant flow of radioactive pollution
into
the North Pacific Ocean, and constant rainout of radioactive
particles from
the upper troposphere in the N hemisphere.
Radioactive Strontium and Cesium are particular concerns. Plants will
readily take up Cesium in place of Potassium, and Strontium in place of
Calcium from the soil. As these contaminants are falling in rain as
well
as settling out from still air, they are going to be landing on the soil
surface and the plant leaves.
How wise is it at present to rake up leaves and compost them, or till in
mulch that has been exposed over the past year to radioactive fallout?

Hi Everyone,
Sean McGovern recommended that I post an article that was featured
on our
website about preventing contaminants in home compost piles.
You can read the article here:
