Folks -

Long time friend, neighbor and mentor, as well as the best selling
author at the wonderful Chelsea Green Press, Harvey Ussery, has agreed
to talk with us at the BD Now! Podcast tomorrow evening about his book
"The Small-Scale Poultry Flock."

I"m writing this note to ask you to be part of Harvey's interview process.

I started the Biodynamics Now! Investigative Farming and Restorative
Nutrition Podcast in the hope that I could use the low cost
broadcasting capabilities of podcasting to enable the "Wisdom of the
Cloud" to extract more appropriate and practical information from
important writers like Harvey.

Hopefully, you've already read his book, which will make asking a
great question much easier.

If you haven't, you can get a fair overview of his book at
www.bdnow.org right now, though. (Or, just read on.)

Asking questions of Harvey through the BD Now! podcast will give you a
chance to here Harvey's answer in his own voice when the podcast is
published.

What I want to ask of you is, if you haven't already, take a look at
Harvey's book and then go to the www.bdnow.org (leave your questions
under 'reply' in the Harvey Ussery section of www.bdnow.org) and
leave any questions you have for Harvey at the site. I'll try to use
your questions to get more information from Harvey when I talk to him
this coming Thursday. You can ask your questions anonymously or you
can have your name mentioned on the program along with your question.
The program is not broadcast live at this time, so there are no call
in questions or interactive questions.

What I'm trying to get to with this is to draw out the questions that
came into your mind as you read the book and, for one reason or
another, you didn't feel the book answered. Along with this are ideas
of your own that the book instigated and you'd like to know what
Harvey thinks of your ideas.

Myself, I'm really impressed by Harvey's approach to on farm
production of protein for the flock, something that will remove small
farmers from their dependence upon soy as a reliable source of
protein. That and his various ideas for getting us off from buying in
all of our poultry feeds.

Thanks

Harvey Ussery has been developing his whole-systems poultry husbandry
for decades and has been writing about chickens and other fowl for
Backyard Poultry since the inception of the magazine in early 2006. He
has also written numerous articles for Mother Earth News and
Countryside & Small Stock Journal, and has published in American
Pastured Poultry Producers Association's newsletter, Grit!, over the
years. Ussery has presented at national and local events on poultry,
homesteading, and energy and sustainability issues, and maintains a
highly informative website, TheModernHomestead.US. He lives with his
wife, Ellen, in Virginia.

"Harvey Ussery and his wife Ellen are activists in the local foods
movement. They produce all their own poultry and eggs, and grow most
of their own vegetables, year-round, on their small farm in northern
Virginia, and further reduce dependence on the supermarket by
purchasing most of the remainder of their food from local producers.
Harvey has contributed frequently to Mother Earth News, Backyard
Poultry, and Countryside magazines. His book, The Small-Scale Poultry
Flock: An All-Natural Approach to Raising Chickens and Other Fowl for
Home and Market Growers, sets a new standard for holistic poultry
husbandry. " ACRES USA

The Small-Scale Poultry Flock
An All-Natural Approach to Raising Chickens and Other Fowl for Home
and Market Growers
By Harvey Ussery
Foreword by Joel Salatin
Pub Date: October, 2011

At last, longtime farmer Harvey Ussery has created the most
comprehensive and definitive guide to date on raising all natural
poultry for the homesteader and small farmer. His new
book, The Small-Scale Poultry Flock, offers a practical and
integrative model for working with chickens and other
domestic fowl, based entirely on natural systems.
Ussery’s model presents an entirely sustainable system that
can be adapted and utilized in a variety of scales, and will
prove invaluable for beginner homesteaders, growers
looking to incorporate poultry into their farm, or farmers
seeking to close their loop, including extensive information
on:
• Formulating and making your own feed
• How to breed and brood the flock (for breed improvement and for
genetic conservation), including the most complete guide to working
with broody hens available anywhere
• Providing more of the flock’s feed from sources grown or
self-foraged, including production of live protein feeds using
earthworms and soldier grubs
• Using poultry to increase soil fertility, control crop damaging
insects, and to make compost—
including systems for pasturing and tillage of cover crops and weeds
• And one of the best step-by-step poultry butchering guides
available, complete with extensive illustrative photos.
No other book on raising poultry takes an entirely whole-systems
approach, or discusses producing homegrown feed and breeding in such
detail—it is truly an invaluable and groundbreaking guide that will
lead farmers and homesteaders into a new world of self-reliance and
enjoyment.
