G'day,I have been listening to a talk by David W. Orr that he did at
Shumacher College this year. He works at the Oberlin College and was talking
about food tat had been grown on campus in vege gardens and food trees, that
were available to teachers and students. He is working on the Oberlin Project
that he calls full spectrum sustainability, and works much like the
transition town concept. He is an excellent communicatoron biological design,
green buildings and environmental politics, worth looking into. David

Hi all,
where I live (Ireland) it is impossible to find dry ice or liquid nitrogen
which is a pity. I use a tea light to burn of some oxygen and get some extra
CO2 in a container. Not as good as dry ice I would think but it works
sufficiently well to preserve grains for decades in our very wet climate.

Hi George,
My understanding is that CO2 is heavier than air and will therefore sink to
the bottom of the container anyway. It will drive out all the air anyway,
whether it sets on the top or the bottom.
A second reason is that dry ice will "burn" whatever it touches. I would not
want it in direct contact with the container bottom, top or sides, nor the
container contents.
Namaste,
Linda

I have question here:
Why not put it on the bottom of the empty can and then pour the grain
or beans on it?
For my imagination it would make a lot more sense to put the dry ice
in there first and then fill the grin on top - thus the expanding CO2
really drives out all air. I inagine, that if put on top part of the
air might stay trapped on the bottom of the container, so grainborne
bugs could still feast for a while till they use up the oxigen (no
idea how long this would take).
Mit freundlichen Grüßen,
Georg Parlow
