Steiner, Rodale, Fukuoka
Mokichi Okada is the founder of natural farming in Japan. He published
the first text on natural farming in 1952. Natural farming developped
in Japan at the same time organic farming grew up in the West.
Different schools of natural farming have developped in Japan, Korea,
the Philippines and other places. The EM of Prof. Higa just like the
IMO of Dr. Cho have sprung from this tradition. Some aspects of
natural farming differ from organic farming partly due to the
difference of traditional farming in Asia and in the West.
Yuichi Kawaguchi is today the most prominent of the small-scale
non-mechanized no-till farmers in Japan. He has written several
books, run his farm by natural farming for over 30 years and taught
more than 5000 people during workshops and seminars at the Akame
School of Natural Farming during the last 10 years.
H. P. Rusch is a medical doctor by training who founded the Bioorganic
School of organic farming together with H. Mueller from Switzerland .
Rusch also wrote a number of books, most notably a work on soil
fertility (Bodenfruchbarkeit) still considered a classic in Germany.
The book was first published in 1968. His central idea is the "cycle
(Kreislauf) of living substances" between soil, plants and
animals/humans. As a medical doctor, Rusch considered that human
health starts with a healthy soil. Rusch also considers that the soil
layers should not be turned upside down as happens in tilling. The
farmers following this school have for a time used methods and devices
to loosen the soil surface without tilling. However, no-till is not
very common in Europe today.
Cheers,
Dieter
