Hi,
This may not be a bad time to introduce myself since I recently joined the
list.
25 years ago I was a research biologist in Belgium. There were several
reasons to look to do something else at the time and we bought a 70 acre
farm in SW Ireland where we have been into organic self sufficiency farming
ever since. Especially the first few years were hard for we had three young
children to rear with no money left and also as we discovered hardly any
soil at all. We brought some crops with us and none of these survived even
the first month here.
So I spend a good bit of time trialing out crops that could stand up to our
harsh conditions. Many of the most successful happen to be old Inca crops.
Quinoa produces about 3 times as much as wheat here for instance. Yacon
(Polymnia sonchifolia) does extremely well as do potatoes, machua, achocha
and a few others.
Amaranth needs a bit more heath than we have here usually but it did quite
well with the protection of a poly tunnel last year. This year we have had
the coolest summer in maybe a century and the amaranth is less than 10 % of
the usual. This will maybe allow us to eventually breed a cool resistant
variety by making use of the best seeds for a while.
