Sustainability Project Coordinator
Pine Mountain Settlement School
February 2011


Pine Mountain Settlement School is conducting a search for its Sustainability
Project coordinator. Applications should include: a cover letter stating

Brief summary of the position: The Sustainability Project coordinator at Pine
Mountain Settlement School shall work on agricultural projects at the
School and on
the Grow Appalachia project in the local community. The sustainability
coordinator
shall help to improve Pine Mountain’s garden operation by implementing
sustainable
agricultural practices, increasing yields, and providing more vegetables
for the
School’s food service operation. The School’s gardens shall be an integral
part of
Pine Mountain’s overall programming, and shall be incorporated into
environmental
education classes and other programs.


The sustainability coordinator shall also work with Pine Mountain staff to do
research, plan, raise funds and implement energy conservation/renewable
energy
projects in the School’s facilities. The sustainability coordinator shall
help
track energy use and identify ways to reduce energy consumption on campus.


Approximately two-thirds of the coordinator’s work time shall be spent on
agricultural projects and one-third shall be spent on energy efficiency
projects at
Pine Mountain and in the local community. It is important that the
coordinator have
strong agricultural skills.


Primary tasks and responsibilities:
1) To coordinate the School’s agricultural work with the local community
and the
Grow Appalachia project
2) To work with Pine Mountain staff, interns, seasonal employees and
AmeriCorps/VISTA workers on agricultural projects on campus and in the Grow
Appalachia project
3) To work with Pine Mountain staff to implement sustainable gardening
practices,
including but not limited: to composting, soil enrichment, use of
environmentally
friendly fertilizers and pesticides, crop rotation, raised beds.
4) To work with Pine Mountain staff to increase the amount and variety of
food grown
on campus
5) To work with the Laurel House staff on new ways to use food grown on
campus
6) To work with the School’s executive director, maintenance staff, board of
trustees and consultants to set priorities for and implementation of energy
conservation and renewable energy projects on campus
7) To track energy usage on campus
8) To help Pine Mountain administrative staff with fundraising for the
sustainability coordinator’s position
9) To help Pine Mountain administrative staff with fundraising for energy
conservation/renewable energy projects on campus
10) To recruit interns and seasonal workers for the School’s
sustainability program
11) To work with the School’s environmental education staff to incorporate
on-going
and special agricultural projects and energy conservation/renewable energy
projects
into current programs
12) Other duties as needed


Education and skills needed to ensure success in this position:

At least a college degree or equivalent education and experience in
relevant fields
Good writing and communications skills
Good time management skills
Good organizational skills
Good computer skills
Grant-writing skills


Experience needed to ensure success in this position:

Extensive agricultural knowledge, hands-on experience, and success in
implementing
sustainable agricultural practices
demonstrated ability to supervise others
demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate work projects and schedules
