A couple organizations to check out might be:

City Slicker Farms <http://www.cityslickerfarms.org/> in West Oakland
Urban Farming <http://www.urbanfarming.org> based in Detroit
Detroit Agriculture Project <http://www.detroitagriculture.org> in Detroit

I haven't been involved in any of these orgs and don't know much about them,
but I have heard that there are similar ones throughout the Rust Belt. Slow
Food USA <http://www.slowfoodusa.org/> might be a good resource as well.
