"With several minor amendments offered and withdrawn, the Nov. 18 committee markup of S. 510 was fairly anticlimactic, said Robert Guenther, senior vice president of public policy for the United Fresh Produce Association.

Guenther said legislators will likely continue working on issues such as the role of finished product testing and how the bill will handle regulation of small growers until the full Senate considers the bill.

While the timetable for Senate consideration is unclear, Guenther said it may be pushed into next year.

Senate leadership is striving to take up the health care bill before Christmas, he said.

Congressional leaders also may want to push the bill to 2010 because of election year considerations, said Cathy Enright, vice president of government affairs for Western Growers' Washington, D.C., office."
