A society that fought off the hippie label, and became the biggest organic
group in the world per capita, has held its last meeting.
The Tasmanian Organic Gardening and Farming Society began in 1972, and
involved people like TV presenter Peter Cundall, and the founder of
permaculture, Bill Mollison.
The group met for its last AGM on Saturday, after its members agreed it had
'run out of puff'.
Founding member David Stephens says while the end is sad, it says something
about society's changed view of organics.
"It's accepted universally now, not just throughout Australia, but
throughout the world," he says.
"It's only right that these specialised clubs just merge in with society.
"So it's with mixed feelings that I see the end of it, but I'm also very
happy because of what's happening in the world."
