Friday, JUNE 12, 9-10am, Sustainable World Radio
Interview with Juan Rojas of the Institute of Mesoamerican Permaculture

Sustainable World Radio, KCSB 91.9 FM PST
also streaming live on www.kcsb.org, interviews posted later on www.sustainableworldradio.com

Join Jill Cloutier of Sustainable World Radio for an interview with Juan Rojas of the Institute of Mesoamerican Permaculture (IMAP). Rojas has been instrumental in establishing grassroots organizations aimed at appropriate methods of farming and land restoration, always seeking the skills and expertise of local farmers. Since 1994 Rojas has been a part of the thirty year old Campesino a Campesino (Farmer to Farmer) movement.

Joining Jill in studio will be Wes Roe and Margie Bushman of Santa Barbara Permaculture Network who first met Juan Rojas in 2005 at the 7th International Permaculture Convergence in Croatia and then again in 2007 in Brazil for the 8th International Permaculture Convergence. www.ipc8.org. They will be speaking about the importance of the International Permaculture Convergences (IPC's) in building an international community of personal and regional knowledge exchanges. The next IPC will be in Malawi, Africa, November 2009.

MORE ABOUT JUAN ROJAS:

Juan Rojas was born in El Salvador, who after qualifying as an industrial electrician became involved in the trade union struggles of the 1980's. Forced into exile by a brutal military regime, he spent four years in Mexico, and later eight years in Australia where he studied Permaculture as a useful tool for rebuilding his home country following the peace accords of 1992.

Mesoamerica is a term that recognizes the cultural, ecological, traditional, and sociological similarities, rather than political boundaries of what currently makes up the countries of Central America. Juan Rojas is a certified permaculture instructor and one of the founders of both the Institute of Mesoamerican Permaculture and the Permaculture Institute of El Salvador who has worked with others to acknowledge these similarities along with the comparable dilemmas and obstacles that countries in the regions share.

Juan recently taught an Advanced Indigenous Permaculture Design Course May 26-june 4 2009 in Wisconsin for the Oneida Nation at the Tsyunehka Farm hosted by the College of Menominee Nation Sustainable Development Institute. www.sustainabledevelopmentinstitute.org

Amir,

Welcome! I live in the Northwest USA and teach permaculture to children. In
two years I will be moving to Slovenia (close to the Coratia border). I have
been contacting and collecting information on permaculture work in the area,
so I am excited to meet you. I don't know of anyone in Bosnia yet, although
there are a lot of projects happening in Croatia right now. Let's keep in
touch, as I plan on travelling there next Summer and would like to tour some
farms in Bosnia.

Take care,
Roman Shapla

Hello everybody!

I am Amir from Sarajevo, Bosnia. I work as a business consultant half time,
and volunteer for an eco-tourism organisation. With a couple of friends I am
also involved in an NGO and one of our main goals is promoting permaculture
here. But I still know very little and I am excited to learn more.

best regards :))

Think of the dogs as special-needs members of the family. They are
not pests to be excluded or design problems to work around. They are
part of the family and thus need to be taken into consideration.

Observe the dogs and see how they use the yard. If you're not a "dog
person," find or hire a dog person to interpret for you (a dog
trainer would be good, or basically anyone who knows and loves dogs).

If they are fenceline-running dogs, make sure there's space between
shrubs and fence for them to patrol, because they will wear out a
path there.

If they're diggers, find out if a sand pit will satisfy them. A San
Francisco designer created a 3-ft.-deep pit, filled with sand, for
the family dogs in a small garden. If they're digging because they're
bored and they don't have toys to play with outdoors or they're
untrained, then provide better diversions or tell the owner they need
to be trained. Or suggest that the owner take them on more long walks
instead of letting them loose in the yard. It may help to design a
play yard or play structure for the dogs. If they're digging to
create a cool nest in the soil, then provide an even more inviting
shady place for them. And so on.

If they haven't been trained to use a specific part of the yard for
pooping, then the dog owners need to train them, or hire a trainer. I
consider this to be Dog 101, and most dogs I've known are happy to
have a dedicated pooping area (which the owners clean up regularly,
either into a dog-poop-digesting composter or into plastic bags to be
taken Away -- perhaps the dog owners will need to be trained as well).

Another thing most dogs like is a place to observe the world outside
their yard: a gate they can look through, or a dog-height window in a
fence, or a similar vantage point.
