Love the post about the girls' produce stand being considered illegal by the mayor.

I sent this letter to the Mayor:

Dear Mayor Manning,

You have a wonderful opportunity here to champion locally owned small business. Instead of a Wal-Mart or other box store taking money away from your local community, you have two entrepreneurs who will keep their dollars in the community, spending it at local businesses, making your area richer in many ways.

You can make a new zoning law that permits small (under $1000 of business or whatever limit you decide) temporary (that excess produce won't last forever) businesses to encourage youth to do business in a legal way.

Think of the repercussions if you were to be positive about this instead of negative--you might even make National TV.

Buy local!

Cecile Mills from rural California.

--> I added this to the post on the Back 40 website:

To the people who live nearby the girls' stand...go talk to someone on the Planning Commission. Hit the City Council with a proposal for Produce Stands. Research the Buy Local Food movement. Go buy some squash!

And consider the economic health of communities who sell out to box stores. We have a proposal for a 200,000 square foot store that would take up 19 acres of prime ag land just for parking. It would put 27 local merchants out of business. We are fighting this.

When you support local businesses, even those run by children, you are saving your community from the economic drain that occurs when big box stores come in. Unfortunately, our local officials all are in favor of the big box store and against local businesses--perhaps they have been paid off! We don't know but we suspect so.

Here's the mayor's address--tell him what you think:

During the recently completed primary season, roughly 35 million people voted for somebody who was not a white man. Clinton and Obama's overall vote total far exceeded that of all the white men for both parties in the political race, combined. Think of what this means!
