Position: Program Director (Perennial Crop Specialist)

Project Duration: July 1, 2008 through February 14, 2009, possibility for
follow-on projects

Location: Badakshan Province, Afghanistan

I am recruiting this position on behalf of Roots of Peace for the
Afghanistan Alternative Development Program-North that aims to revitalize
and develop perennial horticulture and tree crops. Roots of Peace has
worked in Afghanistan since 2003 and is recognized as the leading perennial
horticulture expert in Afghanistan. Their operations in Afghanistan are
headquartered in the capital city of Kabul with field locations in Bagram,
Charikar, Mir Bocha Kot, Baharak, Jalalabad, Mazar-e-Sharif and Kandahar.
Operating with a staff of 230 employees in 9 provinces, RoP works on both
demine and replant projects, aimed at revitalizing local economies.

Detailed Tasks Assigned: The position is responsible for overall project
success, and specifically the following tasks:

* Overall management, supervision and coordination of the
project;
* Management of extension activities, including demo plots,
training, nursery development;
* Facilitate dried fruit processing and exports;
* Supervision and coordination of outputs of all team members;
* Liaison with local government, the private sector, civil
society organizations and other stakeholders;
* Monitoring and evaluation of project progress and impact
introduction of results based impact monitoring system;
* Create monthly and final reports.

Reporting: This position will report to the Country Director based in
Kabul, Afghanistan

Compensation: The salary for the consultant is dependant upon candidates
past salary history and related work experience. Roots of Peace provide a
full benefits program. Additional allowances of up to 70% apply for this
position. This is a USAID program and ROP follows USAID guidelines for
compensation.

Allowances: Detailed benefits description will be provided to final
candidate. Here is a summary of Roots of Peace benefits for this position
in Afghanistan:

* Vehicle and driver is provided;
* Medical insurance;
* Emergency medical evacuation insurance;
* Life insurance;
* 2 Home R&R trips per year, 2 Regional R&R trips per year;
* To/from travel;

Education: Ideal applicant shall have a Horticultural degree from a
well-known University, Master or PhD preferred.

Geographic Experience: Afghanistan is preferred.

Project Experience: Minimum 5 years of International Development experience
in multiple developing countries is required.

. Work with perennial crops essential (walnuts, cherries,
plums, apricots)

. Work with IPM

. Work in developing countries

. Experience with international donors is required

. Previous work with post-harvest handling

Management Experience: The Program Director will manage a diverse team of 40
people. Applicant needs to show a proven record of team and project
management in international development projects.
