In his "Biological Study on Organic Thinking" entitled "Bodenfruchtbarkeit"
(Soil Fertility) (1968), H. P. Rusch, cofounder of the bio-organic school
of
organic farming in Germany (different from the bio-dynamic school founded
by Steiner), claims that the soil is best fed by frequently supplying small
doses of organic matter to the soil surface. Regarding the different soils
in hot and cold climates, he states that the reserves of long-term stable
humus in the soil increase as you go North because the high temperatures
in hot climates cause humus to deplete at a higher rate. This means that in
the hot regions of the world more organic matter needs to be returned to
the soil than in a cold climate just to maintain levels of Soil Organic
Matter.
This is possible because longer growing seasons in the South translate
into the production of more biomass.

The most interesting work on soil fertility I've seen is a few short
papers by Roland Bunch based on the work of Ana Primavesi. Basically,
she describes the traditional approach to fertilization as the
Nutrient Quantity Concept -- the notion that specific nutrients need
to be supplied to plants in periodic large doses -- and proposes that
in the tropics, the Nutrient Access Concept is more important. This
is the notion that plants need constant access to tiny quantities of
nutrients, best supplied by nurturing the soil biology and using
sufficient compost and mulch.
