Stephanie,
This is standard operating procedure for many folks I know. Usually its a matter of closing appropriate furnace vents in and out of the spaces, making sure there are no freezable pipes in danger, and using draft dodgers (sand or other-filled fabric "snakes") at the base of the doors to further seal the rooms. As far as homes "designed" for this, I am not aware. I suppose it would require insulated walls and doors between the two areas and careful plumbing.

Greetings friends,
Has anyone out there built, or owned, a home that is designed for winter
"hibernation" -- sealing off summer sections of the house to conserve heat
in a smaller core space for the wintertime? I'd like to hear about your
design, see photos, get recommendations on what works and what doesn't, etc.
