HERE BUILDING a REGIONAL FOOD SYSTEM in the LEHIGH VALLEY
On Wednesday, January 24, 2007, a conference entitled Building a Regional
Food System: Supporting Farmers, Families, Communities, and the Environment
will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Lehigh Valley, 424
Center Street, Bethlehem, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
This event will include a keynote by Jerry Brunetti, Chair of the Lower
Mount Bethel Township EAC, on why we need a regional food system. It will be
followed by a panel discussion that will look at the importance of a local
food economy from several different perspectives. Dr. Erik Von Kiel will
address the food and health connection; Chuck Suloff of Penn State
Cooperative Extension-Lehigh County will deal with the current status of
Lehigh Valley farm production; Aimee and John Good of Quiet Creek Farm will
talk about choosing to farm in the 21st century; JoAnn Jones of the
Sustainable Business Network-Lehigh Valley will focus on buy local campaigns;
and Steve Hoog of Lehigh Valley Beyond Oil will discuss concerns about
responding to peak oil and global warming.
After the panel, participants will be invited to visit different
information stations to learn more about specific issues and sign up for
future planning sessions. These follow-up sessions will be held in February
in order to generate action proposals to be presented at the Penn State
Cooperative Extension's Lehigh Valley Ag Summit on March 14th.
Anyone wishing to be involved in the strengthening of our regional food
system is invited to attend: concerned residents, community leaders, farmers
and gardeners, environmentalists, local business people, municipal officials,
and people who eat!
There will be a light meal of soups and accompaniments to showcase our
regional foods at 5:30 p.m. In order to ensure adequate portions, those
wishing to join us for this complimentary dinner MUST RESERVE a place by
contacting Steve Hoog at 610-410-5975 or livingpotentials@yahoo.com .
