You're right about the cedar waxwing story, although we didn't have the Ilex
decidua you mention.
We had a mountain ash and unfortunately right near the tree, we had a bank of
very tall windows. Sadly, the birds would get drunk and fly into the windows.
We remedied that as quickly as possible with long strings tacked to the top
center of each window that were tied with white rags strips spaced along the
string. They would blow in the wind to give them the 'heads up' there's a
window there.
Not sure how effective those 'diving bird' stickers are on windows when there
is zero movement on them. And this was back in the 70's & 80's before I ever
saw those in nature stores or anything. The whiteness of the rags at least
was a good contrast to the varied shadows on the window (depending on how the
light was hitting the glass at the time) and they took care of the problem
for the most part.
If they hadn't broken their necks, my mom actually managed to nurse quite a
few of them back to health just by keeping them warm so they didn't go into
shock.
