i used a mattock this season getting ready to do the mulch beds. the row
where i did a lot of work with it (before i got worn out) is doing much
better than the row that got only half-hearted swings in there. mainly i was
removing rocks and breaking up hard ground with it. then i mulched heavily
over that. i also put in some rich creek silt for each of the plants i put
down in the row of well chopped dirt and rocks, so it could be that which has
caused those plants to fare better, and less to do with the fact that i did
more work on it with the mattock.
