PRACTICAL PERMIE WEEKEND
June 10 - 11, 2006
Hosted by:
Edible Landscapes
Roberts Creek, BC
(604)-885-4505
www.ediblelandscapes.ca
Throw out the theory and pie charts! Its time to get down in the garden and
touch, taste, smell and handle plant and building materials so that we can
more easily assimilate Permaculture concepts into our daily lives. Come and
meet our team of facilitators, who were chosen for their deep knowledge and
wealth of very local (lower mainland BC) experience.
The Practical Permie weekend will be held at three sites in Roberts Creek,
B.C. Camping and access to nearby Bed and Breakfast are available. Meals can
be ordered or your own food can be prepared on site. Please bring your own
drinking water if you can carry it, and specialty foods if required.
There is plenty of walking, cycling and tea drinking between courses, for
those not taking "full day" programs.
Our goal will be to expand Permaculture experiences and to increase
networking between the Permie communities.
WHAT'S UP FOR THE PRACTICAL PERMACULTURIST?
Saturday will be a *plant based* day at Edible Landscapes, a day of plant
recognition, home food preservation, possible income ventures,
microclimating tools, wild crafting and more. Sunday, Peter Light breaks
things open with a broad range of topics from a material scavenging trip,
mulching, garden design and layout, plant guilding, windbreak creation and
even more!
See below for details on all the classes and their facilitators.
Saturday June 10 - 9:00AM - 10:30AM
Chinese Herbs in the Lower Mainland - with Sarah Jacobs
As Traditional Chinese Medicine becomes more recognized by North Americans,
growers and healers are taking a second look at the plants that make up the
hundreds of medicinals used as tea, pellet or poultice. Affinity Tours
(Sarah Jacobs and Robin Wheeler) have begun to investigate which plants will
grow well here and how they can be used medically or for possible commercial
production. Sarah will introduce participants to over 30 plants used in
Chinese medicine and discuss parts used and problems of harvest and
preparation.
Sarah is a Registered Acupuncturist (R.Ac) and trained for five years in
herbal medicine, acupuncture and TCM theory at the International College of
Traditional Chinese Medicine in Vancouver. After graduating from SFU, Sarah
spent a year in India and Asia where her exposure to traditional health care
inspired her to study holistic medicine. Sarah has recently returned from
China where she did further training at the Guang Xi Traditional Chinese
Medicine University Hospital.
Saturday June 10 - 10:45AM - 12:15AM
Wildcrafting Medicinal Indigenous Herbs - with Lyrae Emerson
An examination of the methods of ethically harvesting wild and indigenous
plants in a manner that minimizes impact on the population while maximizing
their medicinal potential. We will discuss some of the plants traditional
medicinal uses, and how the practice of wildcrafting in itself can be a
healing experience. We will also look at some of the methods of processing
the leaves, flowers, berries, bark and roots that we collect.
Lyrae Emerson, BSc, Honours, Environmental Sciences, is a biodiversity (aka
biological diversity) specialist and self-taught healer (through research)
who learned to use wild medicinal herbs to heal her body after several
western style medical doctors had given up on her and told her there was
nothing more they could do for her. Now she shares her knowledge and
experiences to help others see that there is always hope.
Saturday June 10 - 1:00PM - 2:30PM
The Design process: Reading the
Secrets of the Land - with Diane Falvey
In this course, we ask the question: "What can we do with this piece of
land?" We look at the "why" of processes and relationships of the existing
landscape energy, using all of our senses, being alert to the interaction of
living and inert factors in the landscape: climate and microclimate, water,
soil, living things, and the non-tangible. With this information, we can act
with clarity and in harmony with the land, within our resulting permaculture
designs.
Diane Falvey is an Agroecologist, Permaculture Designer and a certified
permaculture instructor. Diane participated in the Findhorn Community in
1978, she has taught and assisted at permaculture workshops in the Vancouver
area since 1994, and assisted at the two week intensive at The Kootenay
Permaculture Institute in Winlaw BC, 2005. She is presently co-teaching
courses for back-yard food production called *Urban Food *. In her time off,
Diane is a fine arts conservator and has been preserving culture for 35
years.
Saturday June 10 - 2:45PM - 4:15PM
Identifying and Growing Wild Edibles - with Harry Hill
Harry will help us to recognize the many native berry plants in our region
(with emphasis on the Rubus, Ribes and Vaccinium families), in addition to
plants with edible bulbs, roots and leaves. We will learn how to propagate
native plants from cuttings and seeds, and will discuss how to maintain
semi-wild berry patches.
Harry Hill was editor of Menziesia, the quarterly newsletter of the Native
Plant Society of BC, for seven years. He has run a home-based native plant
nursery in Roberts Creek, and given slide/talks on native plants to
ElderCollege and many garden clubs.
Saturday June 10 - 4:30PM to 6:00PM
Edible Plant Recognition and Siting - with
Robin Wheeler
Growers new to Permaculture are running into plant names like Sea Kale and
Cinnamon yam. However, what are the cultivation needs of these plants, and
will they be valuable additions to the garden? We will look at dozens of
plants, from the common to the obscure, and will taste and consider the many
variables that make a plant a strong, multiuse contender for our garden
space.
Robin Wheeler is owner of Edible Landscapes. She is founder of the One Straw
Society, the Sunshine Coasts organic growers group. She writes *Coming to
Ground*, a column for Momentum Magazine and wrote *Gardening for the Faint
of Heart* for Raincoast Books. She teaches gardening skills to children and
adults.
Saturday June 10 - 7: 00PM - 8:30PM
Preserving the Harvest - with Val Lugar
Maximizing our harvest by preserving it well is a mainstay to sustainable
living, but a dying art. Val Lugar will give us the basics on canning,
drying, conserves, freezing and more. Fruits and berries, vinegar, apples
and winter preserving of potatoes, beets, carrots, and squash will be
covered. 1 1/2 hours is not long enough for this course but the basics will
be demonstrated.
Val Lugar was born in Australia. She came by her skills *the real way* in
the aftermath of WWII, as her family began to clear brush to create food
gardens. Val moved to Roberts Creek 21 years ago. She owned our co-op cow,
and made cheese and ice-cream as well as annual canning, pickling, and
making basic medicines.
