Banana fields that include tree crops, coffee, and vegetable gardens contain high levels of agrobiodiversity that help farmers overcome difficult economic situations when prices of banana are very low in the markets in Uganda

Production of banana in agroforestry systems is helping Brazilian smallholders to greatly reduce the loss from mokko disease. An expert farmer has developed this system locally known as "banana encapuerada," which was promoted in demonstration activities conducted by PLEC-Brazil team

An agriculture system developed by Peruvian farmers that encourages the establishment and growth of giant grasses (Gynerium sagittatum) and several species of valuable trees in fallows. After two years small farmers cut the giant grasses and leave the trees to plant several varieties of beans, squash, peanuts and other annual crops. Under this system farmers do not burn the slash vegetation. PLEC-Peru is promoting this system in demonstration activities

While Amazonian smallholders rarely eat giant catfish, market selling constitutes an important source of income for the rural poor in the Peruvian Amazonia. Capture of this fish is controlled and regulated by communal laws.

The great diversity of fish species in Amazonia is the main source of food and cash income for the rural poor. PLEC- Peru and PLEC-Brazil are documenting several strategies for diversifying and managing habitats for fish by smallholders.

People from the highlands of Thailand have developed several biodiversity friendly systems to plant several species and varieties of crops while maintaining large areas of forested land. PLEC-Thailand is promoting these systems and quantifying the great genetic diversity of rice, beans, fruit tree species and other species.

Managed fallow: Residents of estuarine floodplain in the state of Amapa, Brazil are profiting from managing timber, fruits and other valuable species in their fallows

A system that combines the planting of trees, bananas, yams, wild vegetables and annual crops such as corn was successfully developed by an expert framer in Kenya. This system was mainly developed as a respond to the scarcity of land due to population growth.

A Tanzanian women farmer is very successful in the production of sweet potato, chili pepper, sugar cane and other crops under banana and fruit trees. Her technique is promoted by PLEC-Tanzania in demonstration activities.

A Tanzanian expert farmer exchanges his knowledge with PLEC scientists from China and Thailand and with Miguel Pinedo-Vasquez from CERC.

the extension agency of Tanzania.

An agriculture system developed by an expert farmer from Ghana. This system that produce high levels of agrobiodiversity is shown to other farmers as part of the demonstration activities conducted by PLEC-Ghana.

(***) Farmers from Baka, Xishuangbanna, China have maintain great diversity of rice and other annual crops as well as large forested areas. This production system is promoted by PLEC-China as part of their demonstration activities.

Protecting lakes: Members of the community of Ilha Sao Miguel have managed to conserve healthy population of endangered species such as manatees. PLEC-Brazil is promoting this successful experience in other villages
