The current issue of Popular Science contains the "Best of What’s New"
The Grand Award in the magazine’s annual Home Tech category is a new
wood treatment process. It involves infusion of sodium silicate under
pressure into the wood and
it forms a protective barrier of amorphous glass, thoroughly penetrating and
protecting the wood.
The resulting building product is more durable, non-toxic, non-corrosive,
non-carcinogenic, and fire-resistant. It is designed for interior and
exterior, above-ground and in-ground use, and is stainable and paintable.
The closest treatment facility is in Greenville, SC and distribution in
the Carolinas is to start in 2006.
Most of the material above was gleaned from the company's web site:
www.timbersil.com <http://www.timbersil.com>
The price quoted in Popular Science was $4.45 for a 2"x4"x8'.
The new ACQ treated wood is very corrosive to fasteners that are not hot
dip galvanized.
